Purpose
 To allow students who have completed the master’s program at our 
Institute to change to the combined master’s–doctoral program, 
permitting mid-program entry under the bachelor’s degree system.

 Article 56 of the Regulations of Gwangju Institute of Science and 
Technology (GIST)
 Guidelines for Operation of Program Change in Graduate Programs

 Departments/divisions offering master’s and doctoral programs.

Selection Cycle
 In principle, selection is conducted once every semester (in January 
and July).
   However, each department chair may set schedules differently as 
needed based on basic education units.

Eligibility for Application
 (Mandatory) Applicants must meet all of the following conditions:

At least 2 semesters (at least 18 credits completed)

Can apply only to program change to a combined master’s–doctoral 
program in the same major as the master’s program
 (Additional Requirements)
  - Submission of official foreign language test scores (TOEIC, TOEFL, 
etc.is recommended.
   ※ The foreign language test scores submitted for admission to the 
master’s program can be used as a substitute here, but applicants may 
submit additional official foreign language test scores if desired.
  - Each department chair may set additional requirements as needed 
to meet the admission conditions for their graduate program.

Benefits
 Exemption from the doctoral program admission fee (80,000 KRW 
per applicant) and from the entrance fee (680,000 KRW per 
applicant).
 The duration of enrollment for students who switch from a 
master’s program to a combined master’s–doctoral program 
includes the semesters completed in the master’s program.
 All credits earned in the master’s program will be recognized.
